This report, produced by the Centre for Public Interest Law (CEPIL) and Wacam, with support from Oxfam in Ghana under the Fair Finance Programme and the Alliance Fund, examines the environmental and human rights effects of Newmont Ghana Gold Limited’s Ahafo North and Akyem projects on selected mining-affected communities.
The study explores concerns relating to land acquisition, compensation, livelihood disruption, shrinking civic space, environmental justice, gendered impacts and the protection of community rights. Drawing on field research, community experiences and legal analysis, the report highlights the need for stronger enforcement of mining, compensation and resettlement laws; meaningful consultation with affected communities; respect for Free, Prior and Informed Consent and improved corporate and state accountability.
Through this publication, CEPIL and Wacam contribute to ongoing civil society efforts to ensure that mining in Ghana protects human dignity, community livelihoods, environmental rights and social justice. The report also acknowledges the courage, candour and participation of communities affected by Newmont’s Ahafo North and Akyem projects.
