Wacam Plants Trees In Bono East, Eastern Regions On Green Ghana Day
Members of Wacam, a human rights and environmental mining advocacy non-governmental organisation (NGO), have planted trees to mark this year’s Green Ghana Day, held recently.
The tree-planting exercise was undertaken by the NGO’s members in Donkro-Nkwanta, Bono East Region, and Mumuadu in the Eastern Region.
They also used the event to inspect trees they planted during previous celebrations of the occasion in line with the NGO’s drive to help conserve the environment for a healthier planet.
In Donkro-Nkwanta, Wacam members planted about 200 trees that included mahogany, teak, and acacia species while 50 trees were planted by the Mumuadu-Wacam Zone.
Speaking on the sidelines of the event, Wacam Zonal Officer for Donkro-Nkwanta, Mr Kingsford Appiah, emphasised the NGO’s commitment towards the global effort at mitigating the adverse impact of climate change.
Our main objective is to help in restoring the green vegetation and the forest cover that has been destroyed due to the activities of irresponsible mining,” he said.
The Mumuadu-Wacam Zone’s exercise was led by their Chairman, Mr Johnson Appiah, and a Zonal Officer and Patron of the Nsutam D/A Junior High School (JHS) wing of Wacam, Mr Robinson.

The exercise was carried out by the Wacam Club in the Nsutam D/A JHS (which saw many of its members comprising pupils of the school) actively take part by planting trees at vantage points of their school compound.
Friday, June 9, 2023, was set aside for Green Ghana Day to encourage the planting of various tree types and species, ranging from ornamental to cash crops, shrubs and fruits.
This year’s tree planting was the third consecutive edition of the national climate change reversal exercise, and it was targeted at planting 10 million trees across the country.
The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, launched this year’s Green Ghana Day at the Great Hall of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, which was themed: “Our Forests, Our Health”.
The Green Ghana Day was instituted in 2021 by the government, under the auspices of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources (MLNR), as part of an aggressive afforestation and reforestation programme to restore the country’s lost forest cover.
