Improved Water Resource Management Requires Decisions Based on Economic Efficiency, Social Equity And Ecological Sustainability

Wacam and the Centre for Environmental Impact Analysis are calling on the government and citizens to protect our water resources destruction by irresponsible mining operations from “Galamsey” actors and multinational mining companies.

In their joint press statement to mark this year's world water day celebration under the theme 'valuing water', the organisations stated that today marks an opportune time for all stakeholders to reflect on the critical role water plays in the nation’s socio-economic developmental agenda.CEIA and Wacam believe that the subject of valuing water is very relevant and its discussion must take into consideration, the culture and traditions of indigenous people, global perception as well as economic considerations of full-cost recovery.

We are of the belief that as a nation, we are not reaping the benefits of these huge investments made by our governments due to the fact that the government is engaging in some form of policy contradiction such as opening up of forest reserves of this country for mining activities as these forests serve as the source of rivers from which Ghana Water Company draws raw water for treatment and onward transmission and distribution to the urban dwellers.

CEIA and Wacam believe that the subject of valuing water is very relevant and its discussion must take into consideration, the culture and traditions of indigenous people, global perception as well as economic considerations of full-cost recovery.
