Call For Expression of Interest - Citizens-Led Mining Impact Assessment Tool
Wacam, with support from Oxfam in Ghana, has launched a call for a consultant to design and implement an assessment tool to evaluate the impact of Newmont's Ahafo North and South Mining operations on human rights and the environment.
The successful consultant will develop a comprehensive and community-led assessment tool, conduct field research, and facilitate a forum for community members to rank the company's compliance with human rights and environmental obligations. The assessment tool will enable affected community members to systematically evaluate and rank the company's performance, promoting greater accountability and fostering responsible mining practices.
The project aims to strengthen local civil society and support communities in seeking redress for rights abuses in the mining sector. Wacam has a long history of working with affected communities to protect their rights and the environment.
The ideal consultant will have proven experience in developing tools or methodologies for human rights and environmental assessment, a strong background in community engagement and participatory methodologies, and knowledge of national and international laws on human rights and the environment.
The scope of work includes:
* Developing a comprehensive and community-led assessment tool/scorecard
* Conducting field research and data collection
* Facilitating a forum for community members to rank the company's compliance
* Preparing a draft report and final report
Submissions are due by Friday, August 23rd, 2024, and should be sent to info@wacamgh.org.
The project timeline is expected to be completed by the end of October 2024.
